Matthijs Ariëns

I can see the wood for the trees, to decide which I must chop to achieve the best result. My approach is thorough, to get to the bottom of the problem.

As an experienced litigation lawyer, Matthijs Ariëns knows like no other how best to use all available tools to that end – because procedural law is a specialist area. He offers a toolbox full of options, which makes the difference between winning and losing.

Matthijs specialises in resolving conflicts and conducting proceedings in the field of business. His work centres on different forms of cooperation, contracts (such as agency and distribution agreements, partnership contracts and contracts for services), directors’ and officers’ liability and wrongful acts.

With his strong sense of justice and natural drive to win, procedural law suits Matthijs perfectly. His strong analytical skills allow him to quickly get to the heart of the matter and to accurately identify the opportunities and impossibilities of a case. He focuses on employment law in addition to procedural law: “Employment law also requires fast action and a great deal of negotiation. And, if necessary, litigation of course. I love that game of chess.”

Matthijs Ariëns completed the Employment Law postgraduate specialist course with distinction in 2007. Matthijs is a university lecturer of Civil Procedural Law & Insolvency Law at the Free University of Amsterdam and of Directors’ and Officers’ Liability at several other postgraduate educational institutions. In April 2023, Matthijs was elected to be the best litigation lawyer of the Netherlands. This election has been organised by the Association of Collection and Litigation Lawyers (VIA) since 2018.

Matthijs is an independent lawyer associated with Köster and registered with the district of North Holland.
